A line is one of the simplest elements of art, yet its possibilities are endless. It can give an image structure or movement, create a boundary, or make a connection. Beyond the visual arts, we make lines and encounter them everywhere. Even our language is filled with lines: lines we draw, cross, follow, and read between.
Sometimes a line divides. Sometimes it connects.
In Line by Line, artists consider this familiar element in different ways, using lines to build an image, capture something observed, or express an idea. Their approaches range from marks made by hand to lines discovered in the world around us.
