Tenebrism in Still Life Joyce Pearson, Photographer Tenebrism focuses on the high contrast between brightly lit subjects and darkly lit backgrounds. These still life images are defined by a deep wash of black in the inky dark shadows with a spotlight effect of lighting. This causes an extreme separation between the subject and the background. Tenebrism is sometimes regarded under the umbrella of chiaroscuro, an Italian term meaning light-dark. This image was shot in a studio setting using a dark drape on the horizontal and vertical surfaces with a piece of glass providing reflections of the subjects. Natural light from a westerly window provided the only light source.
