Jackup (from the series Synthetic Fields) - Sara McTigue
Acrylic paint, plastic forms, fabric on wood
14” x 11” x 1.75”
The thirty part series, Synthetic Fields, aimed to visually represent the volume and pervasiveness of blow-mold, polymer packaging. Obvious and ambiguous shapes were reformed by vibrant color into individual fields to highlight the magnitude of machined plastic waste. Self-elevating, jackup rigs are used in offshore gas and oil drilling. The term jack up also implies aggression and violence; terms inextricably linked to the image of a gun. I am fascinated by process, industry, the permanent and impermanent and strive to investigate my own relationship with convenience and consumption in this work.
