The Existentialism of Blackness - Yvonne Ferguson

Acrylic on canvas

The title of my project is The Existentialism of Blackness: The Contradiction of Black Personhood and the Prison Industrial Complex. A collection of mugshots of black leaders, icons & activists at the intersection of Black humanity, iconography, and the prison industrial complex. This collection asks the questions: What is the impact on a person’s humanity, historical contributions, and significance after the intersection of the inequitable prison industrial complex? Does this shape society’s attitude toward the contributions, significance, accomplishments, and philosophy of Black leaders?

1st piece: …With Love (Brittney Griner)

2nd piece: On Violence (Angela Davis)

3rd piece: Strange Fruit (Billie Holiday)
