To take on - Benedicta Opoku-Mensah
Mixed-Media Installation
As a female sculptor from a society where art is often disregarded, and sculpting is mistakenly associated with men. The disparity is obvious; of the roughly twenty-five females in my undergraduate program, I am the only one who is unwaveringly dedicated to a career in the arts. I do not cast blame because I am aware of the difficulties faced by my peers who chose more traditional career routes. Instead, I can relate because I've been in their position. It is difficult to choose a career that deviates from social norms, especially in my society in Ghana where gender stereotypes about artists prevail and art is not given the respect it deserves.
In this artwork, I explore my journey of self-discovery, delving into the facets of my identity not only as a female sculpture artist but also as a female black sculpture artist. The artwork invites viewers to contemplate the multifaceted journey of self-discovery, encompassing both personal and universal dimensions. It encourages reflection on various aspects of existence and encourages active participation in a dialogue centered around change, growth, and self-realization.
